Summary

There's decorating, and then there's organizing。 From the Instagram-sensation home experts (with a serious fan club that includes Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Mindy Kaling), here is an accessible, room-by-room guide to establishing new order in your home。

Believe this: every single space in your house has the potential to function efficiently and look great。 The mishmash of summer and winter clothes in the closet? Yep。 Even the dreaded junk drawer? Consider it done。 And the best news: it's not hard to do--in fact, it's a lot of fun。

From the home organizers who made their orderly eye candy the method that everyone swears by comes Joanna and Clea's signature approach to decluttering。 The Home Edit walks you through paring down your belongings in every room, arranging them in a stunning and easy-to-find way (hello, labels!), and maintaining the system so you don't need another do-over in six months。 When you're done, you'll not only know exactly where to find things, but you'll also love the way it looks。

A masterclass and look book in one, The Home Edit is filled with bright photographs and detailed tips, from placing plastic dishware in a drawer where little hands can reach to categorizing pantry items by color (there's nothing like a little ROYGBIV to soothe the soul)。 Above all, it's like having your best friends at your side to help you turn the chaos into calm。

The good thing about this book is that it’s possible to read it all in one sitting。 It has some nice reference photos and provides some tips that I will probably use。 However, I have a hard time with the idea that in order to get organized I’d have to go out and buy a bunch of new stuff- a million clear containers, new hangers, etc。 Sorry, but there’s no way I’m going to pour all my dry goods into clear containers the cut out the labels from the original packaging so I can save the cooking instr The good thing about this book is that it’s possible to read it all in one sitting。 It has some nice reference photos and provides some tips that I will probably use。 However, I have a hard time with the idea that in order to get organized I’d have to go out and buy a bunch of new stuff- a million clear containers, new hangers, etc。 Sorry, but there’s no way I’m going to pour all my dry goods into clear containers the cut out the labels from the original packaging so I can save the cooking instructions。 I don’t see how that would save me any time。 I am inspired to clean out some drawers and get rid of some stuff, though, so that’s good。 。。。more

I absolutely love their process!!

I listened to this book on my way to organize a client's closet so I didn't get to see the photos。 A few of the ideas are frequently used by professional organizers, but most descriptions sound like they are purely for esthetics and not for real life。 For example, organizing toy cars by color so your child can locate the right one to play with。 I have never had a child do that。 I listened to this book on my way to organize a client's closet so I didn't get to see the photos。 A few of the ideas are frequently used by professional organizers, but most descriptions sound like they are purely for esthetics and not for real life。 For example, organizing toy cars by color so your child can locate the right one to play with。 I have never had a child do that。 。。。more

This book is basically unrealistic eye candy。 Seriously, who has as much room or as many drawers available for these types of storage? And if you do, do you also have the money to over buy plastic containers to put your razors in individual containers by color? And don't forget the labels! Make sure you open every store-bought container and dump it into a clear plastic container with a label on it, like cereal or nuts, but don't specify what type。 Have fun washing out all of the containers befor This book is basically unrealistic eye candy。 Seriously, who has as much room or as many drawers available for these types of storage? Pretty straight forward。 Didn’t learn anything new, but still funny and aesthetically pleasing

So unnecessary。 。 。For starters, the photos in this book are from the homes of wealthy people, most of which likely have a nanny and a housekeeper, so I have a really hard time believing that this will work for the average housewife! Also, these people have white shelves everywhere, which I'll admit instantly makes your pictures look crisp and clean, but that's how I KNOW these people have a housekeeper。 I also have white shelves in my kitchen cabinets, and they are stained by years of use。 And I So unnecessary。 。 。For starters, the photos in this book are from the homes of wealthy people, most of which likely have a nanny and a housekeeper, so I have a really hard time believing that this will work for the average housewife! Also, these people have white shelves everywhere, which I'll admit instantly makes your pictures look crisp and clean, but that's how I KNOW these people have a housekeeper。 I also have white shelves in my kitchen cabinets, and they are stained by years of use。 And I'm not talking the kind of stains that can be removed。 。 。 at this point, they're permanent。 It's repaint, or just embrace it!The other gripe I have is that there are so many unnecessary steps or simply aggravating ones, taken here。 These women advise taking everything out of its original containers, and putting it in clear containers。 Admittedly, I guess that this will help you to know when you're running low on a thing, and it makes it look prettier, I suppose。 But I don't want to waste time putting Tide pods into a glass jar that kids will almost definitely break at some point, causing danger of not only them eating the pods but also of them cutting themselves, when I can just make a note to buy more when the plastic container is low。I don't have kids, or use Tide pods, I'm just an overthinker, and this is just an example。But most of their advised containers are sort of flimsy, and they advise you to buy a ton of them, possibly more than you need, to avoid not having enough。 Give me a sturdy wooden dresser, or at least a thick plastic tote, over these thin, easily broken plastic boxes or glass jars any day! I come from a long line of klutzes, and I'd prefer not to have to replace them constantly! Also, in my experience, if you have a container you don't actually need, you will justify buying more things you need, in order to fill it。 Have more stuff than you have containers for? Get rid of more stuff。 Or, if you can't, still don't buy more containers than you need。Then there's my final complaint。 The ROYGBIV, or whatever you call it。 I can see that this is the favorite organizational tool used here, and if you're organizing art supplies, go for it! Organizing them by color just makes sense。 But you don't have to do that with literally everything else in the house, and for the love of God, don't do this with books! Maybe I'm biased (I know I'm biased), but I was a librarian once, and even if I hadn't been, I've been obsessed with books since I was a child。 I'm not asking you to learn and employ the Dewey Decimal System, but how hard is it to organize by the alphabetical order of the author's last name? Silverstein before Suess shouldn't be that difficult to remember。 It may not look as pretty, I suppose, but it will make it a heckuva lot easier for me to find the book I'm looking for! That being said, these women do clearly know how to make a celebrity's closet look absolutely stunning。 。。。more

I found this to be a solid book for inspiration and general reminders about the processes of decluttering and organization。 There is also light humor mixed in, which I thought was a nice touch。 While I have no intention of labeling everything I own or organizing my books by color, there are a few ideas that I'm implementing, especially in the pantry and linen closet areas。 I found this to be a solid book for inspiration and general reminders about the processes of decluttering and organization。 There is also light humor mixed in, which I thought was a nice touch。 While I have no intention of labeling everything I own or organizing my books by color, there are a few ideas that I'm implementing, especially in the pantry and linen closet areas。 。。。more

Fun, casual personalities, but not ground-breaking ideas。 Their Instagram feed would probably be more helpful。

Sentimentsbydenise

Pure fluff; not much variety in design/organization ideas。

I read it cover to cover since I need all the tips I can get, but if you're naturally organized you could probably just use it to look at the pictures and get ideas for different "looks" for whatever areas of your home you need organized。 One takeaway I got from reading this is that like so many things in life, there is no "one perfect answer。" Just like different schools are a good fit for different children, different organizational strategies are going to be needed for different lifestyles。 I I read it cover to cover since I need all the tips I can get, but if you're naturally organized you could probably just use it to look at the pictures and get ideas for different "looks" for whatever areas of your home you need organized。 One takeaway I got from reading this is that like so many things in life, there is no "one perfect answer。" Just like different schools are a good fit for different children, different organizational strategies are going to be needed for different lifestyles。 I don't remember the authors talking about this much, but it's clear from the variety in their featured projects。 Every pantry and closet has different stuff, so you just have to organize what you have。 Or have *left*, after you've gone through the obligatory purge。 I appreciate that they use real people's homes for their photos, because they hold a realistic number of items。 I'm always annoyed when custom closet ads show how beautiful your closet can look, but then you count and they only have 2 dresses, 3 blouses in graduated shades of white, and 2 pair of pants。 Who has that little in their closet? The four women on earth with the discipline to stick to a capsule wardrobe? This book is a good reference for realistically, how much stuff can you have for your space。 It can always look good with less (and there are some examples of this), but many of these photos show the maximum amount you can keep and have it look good without giving off a "crammed in there" vibe。I recommend this book for anyone who would rather see all this on paper than on Instagram。 。。。more

This is a great book about organization and inviting beauty & function into your home。 I like that they provide clear ways of organizing your home, along with beautiful pictures to inspire you。 The rare book that's fun to flip through and fun to read。 This is a great book about organization and inviting beauty & function into your home。 I like that they provide clear ways of organizing your home, along with beautiful pictures to inspire you。 The rare book that's fun to flip through and fun to read。 。。。more

Great inspiration and I love how they gave a few visual examples of different spaces for each chapter。 Not everyone has a large closet or pantry and there were examples on how to work with it。 Not a book focused on decluttering at all。 It's mentioned, but not discussed in detail。 It's also not a book that includes how to organize your paperwork or your life。 This was about creating aesthetically pleasing and More functional living spaces in your home。 Great inspiration and I love how they gave a few visual examples of different spaces for each chapter。 Not everyone has a large closet or pantry and there were examples on how to work with it。 Not a book focused on decluttering at all。 It's mentioned, but not discussed in detail。 It's also not a book that includes how to organize your paperwork or your life。 This was about creating aesthetically pleasing and More functional living spaces in your home。 。。。more

This was a quick but disappointing read。 I was expecting a lot of tips and tools for the organizational process, but it's mostly a photography book of aesthetically pleasing spaces with short bullet point descriptions。 This book is for inspiration, not instruction, with very little content。 I also found their recommendations unrealistic for most budgets, as well as environmentally unfriendly。 While it's clear that the spaces they are showing are beautiful and functional, the book seems really ou This was a quick but disappointing read。 I was expecting a lot of tips and tools for the organizational process, but it's mostly a photography book of aesthetically pleasing spaces with short bullet point descriptions。 This book is for inspiration, not instruction, with very little content。 I also found their recommendations unrealistic for most budgets, as well as environmentally unfriendly。 While it's clear that the spaces they are showing are beautiful and functional, the book seems really out-of-touch for what's within reach for most。 。。。more

This book is fun, full of colorful pictures and humorous writing, and can be easily read in a day。 But few of us have the storage space or number of items that they arrange so colorfully (think ROYGBIV)。 Instead you are seeing how Hollywood millionaires can have their abundance of things arranged。 I wanted to find out the best way to store sheet sets, and it didn’t even have that。

Corrie

nothing but a glorified blog with pictures

Julie

A lot better books out there on the subject。

Katie

Very helpful system—like a Marie Kondo approach + interior design。 It helped me with my pantry a lot, and just seeing the different photos sparked ideas。

I’ve read Tidying Up, but it was so overwhelming to implement! I’ve had so many regrets…Then I came across The Home Edit tv show and wow! I felt like this could actually work for me! I got my hands on a copy of the book as soon as I could。 This book was so easy to read and everything is laid out in an easy to implement and maintain way。 It’s just logical! I’m so thankful to have found this book!

Neva Williams

This was comparable to an article in People Magazine。 Lots of fluff - no meat。 I finished it, but grudgingly。

3。5/5 I love the idea of all this and will be trying it but I'm having to scale it down to my much smaller closet and pantry, pictures and examples of those would've nice。 3。5/5 I love the idea of all this and will be trying it but I'm having to scale it down to my much smaller closet and pantry, pictures and examples of those would've nice。 。。。more

I think you learn more watching their Netflix show of the same name。 It was nice to read this book to get additional inspiration。

I liked this one。 There were a lot of nice photos, and good ideas。 Other reviews mention that the spaces are unrealistic。 Yes, there are some celebrity spaces show。 It’s kinda of fun to see that they need organizing help too。 I have a 1600 sq ft house, with 5 family members。 I found a lot of inspiration and good ideas for organizing。 I really enjoyed the mix of photos, inspiration and ideas。

This book was exactly what I needed。 I needed a quick read that had all of the “recipes” I need to be able to organize my things。 I know how to get rid of things and prioritize but how do I store it and organize them? This book had the answers I’ve been looking for。

Janet Leigh

Great organizing information。 I can’t wait to get started on my closet。

I wanted to like it but I swear it only looks organized because there are multiples of the same things。 Do all these people shop at BJ'S for everything? This book did its job of inspired me to clean。 It's a beautiful book, with flawless design and colorful pictures。 However, the authors send a mixed message。 They advocate low bar lifestyle, yet promote designs by Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities as a standard。 This book did its job of inspired me to clean。 It's a beautiful book, with flawless design and colorful pictures。 However, the authors send a mixed message。 They advocate low bar lifestyle, yet promote designs by Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities as a standard。 。。。more

Picked this up from a display at the library as it looked useful。 It was not。 The sub-header reference organizing your house but the content if the book is specific to unique situations-e。g。 if you have 100 lipsticks-spoiler alert-I don’t。 I really don’t care about the celebrity name dropping references。 Not particularly useful。

Kristi

I didn’t get any new information, but it was as exactly the motivation I needed to jump back into organizing my home。
